On Friday, June 24, the museum kicks off the summerlong Art Kids, a lively series of family programs offering unique hands-on art activities in the comfortable, playful, air-conditioned, and imaginative setting of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. With activities in the Art Kids Studio, pop-up tours throughout the day, quiet mornings for sensory-friendly activities, and collaborative art making on Friday Nights, this summer season at the museum has something exciting for every family.

Caitlin Deutsch, Manager of Family Programs, said: “Every kid is an art kid! We’re offering programs that kids and families love, making them accessible in a variety of ways, including on-site and across neighborhoods. We’re pleased that we can provide free passes to the museum and art-making kits to campers throughout the city. Whether you are at the museum or participating in a Parks and Recreation camp, Art Kids can be a part of your summer.”

Under the arches of the South Vaulted Walkway, the Art Kids Studio will be open Thursday–Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Families will see the treasures of the collection through a new lens. Studio projects and gallery tours will present an opportunity to “Seize the Clay” (June 24–July 10) and create vessels inspired by Philadelphia potter Roberto Lugo, who puts his own spin on classic forms. “My Favorite Things” (July 15–August 7) will look at how artists set up still lifes to tell stories; young artists will select and combine objects and translate their scene through collage. “Walk on the Wild Side” (August 12–28) will capture the lush and colorful side of nature through painting techniques. Every project will use different materials and artist-grade supplies.

Pay What You Wish Family Festivals on Sunday, July 3, and August 7, will be large-scale celebrations. They will feature performances, community partners, and art making throughout the building. The Family Festival on Sunday, July 3, will celebrate Roberto Lugo’s All about the Benjamins Century Vase and will feature locally based artist Jihan Thomas, demonstrations from the Clay Studio, drop-in art making, and more. Summer culminates with a School District of Philadelphia Free Day on Saturday, August 27.

Art Kids Studio

The heart of Art Kids programming will be the Art Kids Studio located in the South Vaulted Walkway Atrium, with tables for art making and a cozy nook for families to relax. Art Kids Studio is open to all ages. Drop in and stay as long as you’d like. No reservations required.

Art Kids Tours led by museum educators will leave from the Art Kids Studio at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., visiting works of art that highlight the current studio theme.

Friday Nights
On Friday nights in July and August, Art Kids programming will pop up from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. during Pay What You Wish hours. Each evening will be led by a local Philadelphia artist:

Sensory-Friendly Mornings

Art Kids will host four Sensory-Friendly Mornings for families with children on the autism spectrum or with sensory sensitivities. Sessions will be led by specially trained museum staff. Art Kids in the Community

Summer Camp Program with the City and Free Family Pass
The museum is partnering with CraftNow to provide 5,000 art-making kits to Philadelphia Parks & Recreation camp sites across the city. This year’s kit will focus on Roberto Lugo’s All about the Benjamins Century Vase, and all kit materials will be in English and Spanish languages. The kit includes a sketch-booklet with more prompts for art making, colored pencils, and a metallic pen taking inspiration from Lugo’s vase.

A Free Family Pass to visit the museum is also included in the kit. Participants can bring six family members for a free visit through the end of 2023. Passes can be redeemed online using the individualized code or at an admissions desk. For every six people, at least two people in the group must be 21 years old or older.

Admission
All Art Kids programs are included in the price of admission, and museum admission is always free for ages 18 and under. Admission will be Pay What You Wish for adults on Sunday, July 3, and Sunday, August 7, 2022.
