The Philadelphia Museum of Art Welcomes Teachers and Educators to Annual Educator Appreciation Day

September 26, 2024 —  On Saturday, September 28, The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) will welcome teachers and educators from across the Philadelphia region to the museum for the annual Educator Appreciation Day. Hosted by the PMA’s Learning and Engagement team, this event will be held in the museum’s newly opened Learning & Engagement Center, and will offer highlights of upcoming fall exhibitions and activities specifically focused on engaging students across every level of schooling.

Educators and teachers attending will be welcomed with a series of guest speakers, sample school tours with PMA guides, and an overview of the learning resources and workshops available for them. Specifically, the day will feature:

An informational session on the new booking process for teachers to sign up for school tours and teacher workshops.

A discussion of the new and upcoming exhibitions and installations, including the highly anticipated special tours for The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure which features paintings, drawings, and sculptures from contemporary artists across the world to show the complexity and richness of Black life through figuration. The PMA will host an educator preview of this exhibition, along with a series of workshops.

An overview of the PMA’s school tour themes for this school session, including Learning to Look, which teaches students how to become stronger observers of art, Black Art, Black Voices, which focuses on the art, experiences, and perspectives of Black artists in the collection through various mediums ranging from portraits to sculpture, and Mixed Media and Perspective, which exposes students to different materials that can be art

A preview of upcoming educator workshops on themes such as Culturally Relevant Artmaking, Art and Climate Change, and Beauty, with the latter examining the changing standards of beauty through time periods and culture.

An overview of programs specifically for teenagers, including out-of-school-time opportunities including Teen Sketch Club, Summer Teen Media, and special teen events such as gallery tours and curator and guest artist talks.

The day will also provide an opportunity to introduce Audrey Hudson, who recently joined the PMA as the as the new Kathleen C. Sherrerd Deputy Director for Learning and Engagement and Imani Roach, the inaugural director of the Brind Center, the PMA’s newly created center focused on African art and artists.

The PMA’s Annual Educator Appreciation Day will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the museum’s newly opening Learning & Engagement Center at the North Entrance of the museum.
